7 Layer Magic Cookie Bars

Makes: 24–30 bars
Pan: 9 × 13 in (23 × 33 cm)
Prep: 10 minutes
Bake: 25–30 minutes
Oven: 350°F / 175°C

Ingredients

Crust

  • 1½ cups (about 150 g) graham cracker crumbs
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, melted

Layers

  • 1 can (14 oz / 397 g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup (170 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup (170 g) butterscotch chips
  • 1⅓ cups (about 100 g) shredded coconut
  • 1 cup (115 g) chopped pecans or walnuts

The classic version uses essentially these seven components and bakes at 350°F until lightly browned. Eagle Brand

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F / 175°C. Line a 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang so you can lift the bars out later.
  2. Make the crust: Mix the graham cracker crumbs with the melted butter until evenly moistened.
  3. Press firmly into the bottom of the pan. Use the bottom of a glass or measuring cup to make a compact, even crust.
  4. Add condensed milk. Pour the entire can evenly over the crust.
  5. Add chocolate: Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the condensed milk.
  6. Add butterscotch chips.
  7. Add coconut, distributing it evenly.
  8. Finish with the chopped nuts. Gently press everything down with the back of a fork or spatula so the layers adhere.
  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the coconut and edges are golden brown and the condensed milk is bubbling around the edges. Eagle Brand+1
  10. Cool completely. This is important—the filling firms up considerably as it cools. For exceptionally clean cuts, refrigerate for about 30–60 minutes after cooling. King Arthur Baking
  11. Lift out using the parchment and cut into squares.

⭐ To make them look more like your photo

I’d make them extra thick and loaded:

  • 1½ cups chocolate chips
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 1½ cups chopped pecans
  • 1½ cups shredded coconut
  • Keep the full 14-oz can of condensed milk
  • Use a 9×13 pan rather than a larger pan.

You can also use a mixture of milk chocolate + semi-sweet chocolate chips for those big, soft chocolate pockets visible in the photo.

Important: Don’t substitute evaporated milk for sweetened condensed milk—the condensed milk is what creates the characteristic gooey, caramelized filling. Just a Taste
