Southern Caramel Cake Recipe
Southern Caramel Cake is a classic dessert known for its tender, moist cake layers and rich, buttery caramel frosting. This traditional Southern treat is perfect for special occasions or whenever you’re craving a comforting, homemade cake.
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the Caramel Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 to 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pans:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
- Make the Cake:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake the Cake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- Prepare the Caramel Frosting:
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the brown sugar and evaporated milk, stirring constantly. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the mixture cool slightly.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until smooth and thick enough to spread. If the frosting becomes too thick, you can add a little more evaporated milk to reach the desired consistency.
- Assemble the Cake:
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a layer of caramel frosting over the top.
- Add the second cake layer and spread another layer of frosting.
- Add the third cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining caramel frosting.
- Serve:
- Let the cake sit for at least an hour before serving to allow the frosting to set. Slice and enjoy!
This Southern Caramel Cake is a rich and decadent dessert that captures the flavors of the South. It’s perfect for gatherings and celebrations, bringing a touch of homemade comfort to any occasion.
