
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon instant yeast
1 cup warm milk
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons melted butter or oil
1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
Oil for frying
Preparation
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and yeast
Add warm milk gradually and mix until combined
Add eggs, melted butter, and vanilla
Knead until you get a soft, smooth dough that does not stick
Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size
Shaping
Punch down the dough gently
Roll out on a lightly floured surface to medium thickness
Cut into irregular rectangles or strips like in the photo
Cover and rest 10 minutes
Frying
Heat oil in a deep pan to medium heat
Fry pieces in batches, turning once, until puffed and deep golden
Remove and place on a rack or paper towel to drain
Serving
Serve warm
Optional dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with honey
Can be eaten plain or with jam
Tips
Oil should not be too hot or they brown too fast
Resting before frying helps them puff
Can be stored covered for one day and reheated slightly
