Classic Mac & Cheese Recipe
Ingredients:
- Pasta:
- 16 oz (450 g) elbow macaroni
- Cheese Sauce:
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Topping:
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 tsp dried parsley (optional)
Instructions:
- Cook the Pasta:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Prepare the Cheese Sauce:
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until the mixture becomes golden and bubbly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble.
- Reduce heat to low. Add the cheddar, Gruyère, and Parmesan cheeses, stirring until fully melted and smooth.
- Stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Combine Pasta and Sauce:
- Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until the pasta is well coated.
- Prepare the Topping:
- In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs with melted butter, Parmesan cheese, and dried parsley (if using).
- Bake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Pour the mac & cheese into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese sauce is bubbly.
- Serve:
- Let the mac & cheese sit for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to set slightly, making it easier to scoop.
